Coaches Spotlight

Coach Garren Young South Hills Boys Basketball Varsity Assistant Coach.

In our first addition of our coach’s spotlight we focus our attention on Coach Garren Young of Fort Worth South Hills High School.  Coach Young is the varsity 1st assistant to the boys’ basketball program.  Coach Young is completing his second year in coaching and has been a tremendous asset to the basketball program.  Coach Young is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University, where he received his undergraduate degree in Health Science.

Coach gave us some insight on what brought him into the profession.   "I have always had an immense love for the game. Growing up my dad coached my basketball teams up until middle school. Two things he always stressed were mastering the fundamentals and attention to detail. I wanted to coach to teach kids how to play basketball the right way. By first working on the fundamentals and secondly increasing their basketball IQ. For example, proper footwork, using more efficient movements and moves on the court, and how to play without the ball.

Coach Young has set a great example for the young men of the South Hills basketball program.  He is a great teacher of the fundamentals, he has extensive knowledge of the game and he is also a student of the game always looking to learn something new so he can be a great teacher of the game.

We asked Coach Young, what is some advice he could give to young coaches entering the business? Here is what he shared.

a.    Never stop learning
b.    Know your players
c.    Find your coaching voice
d.    Establish your basketball philosophy
e.    Find a work/life balance

For all coaches’ young and old this is great advice.  These are all important factors in becoming a successful coach and leader.  Coach Young's future goals are to coach at the college level.  He is developing himself year after year so that he may live his mission of helping young men learn the game of basketball, and help shepherd our youth the process of childhood to adulthood.  He is an amazing coach, man, and leader and his future is extremely bright.
